St Peter’s Church, Ashley—a brief history

The first Anglican Church in Ashley was the Ashley Mission Church, dedicated by the Bishop pf Southampton on the 3rd July 1904. It was in 1915 that the AMC officially became associated with St Peter. The Church continued to thrive, the congregation was very active socially and there was an extremely well attended Sunday School.

The war didn’t halt the progress of the church’s activities and many new services were introduced during this time. The Jubilee Celebrations of 1954 were many and varied. The then minister spoke of it as a time of

rejoicing, festivity and success, particularly as it has united the whole parish and had increased the coffers for the new church building.

The foundation stone for the new building was laid by the Bishop of Winchester in 1956. The work was duly completed and in 1957 the new St Peter’s Church, Ashley, daughter church of the Parish of Milton was consecrated.  A new addition—the Chapel of the Holy Spirit was consecrated in December 1958 by the Bishop of Southampton. The Tin Church was finally demolished in 1963 and a new church hall was built in 1966. A new house for the minister in charge was completed in 1973 and an extension to the church was added in 1994.

Initiatives such as the ‘Decade of Mission and Evangelism’, Alpha and the Admission of Children to Holy Communion, Jelly Tots and Kidz in church have also been incorporated into the life of St Peter’s.

St Peter’s has been richly blessed over the years with ministers who have each had a deep and meaningful relationship with and experience of God in their lives and who have striven to reflect His values and concerns and to work for the establishment of His kingdom in this beautiful part of His world. We look forward with hope and expectation into the future under the leadership and guidance of our present minister Fr. Harry Jevons and pray that God will continue to bless us all.
